What is Love?

“If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:2-3‬ ‭

What is Love? The dictionary say “an intense feeling of deep affection” and “a great interest and pleasure in something”

What’s is Love? The Bible says “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John‬ ‭15:12-13‬ ‭

You see we are competing with two different types of love. The world with music and movies are displaying dictionary love. Which is impossible to last every day of any relationship because we are selfish people. If you really listen to music and watch most romantic movies, there is pain, there is act of serving to gain someone’s love back, it is not the perfect love story until the end. This all we remember is the end, and we walk away thinking that is reality. The problem not every real story ends like these types music and movies.

The Bible’s form of love is the same way but we always jump to the end where Jesus died and rose again. What about all the pain Jesus faced even before the cross or what about all the times He had to reassure the disciples. It was a battle until He rose again.

So how do we live in a world where we are being told love is almost a fantasy and the Word of God is telling us to lay down our lives for one another?

We have to go back to a Scripture that we rarely focus on but know. Matthew 6:34 says “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Once again we have to stop living for the end and start living one day at a time. Each day we have to remind ourselves that we are nothing without Jesus and that we need Him to help us love like Him in your current situation.

I honestly believe Matthew 6:34 is why we have so many problems because our eyes are fixed on next week, next month, our next 5 year plan. We have to live for today. If we have all the skills, degrees, money, talents, and much more; use it for today and stop worrying about a tomorrow that might not ever come.

You see as we watch a romantic movies when there are moments that have us on the edge of our seats, and all we do is try to figure out what happens in the end. Enjoy that moment of the movie. Every relationship is not perfect, but enjoy the moments of this day. We have to stop ruining things based on the future that we know nothing about. We only have this moment and this day to truly love like Jesus has commanded us. Everything is based off love because that is how we were created.

Let’s all take a break for second. Stop worrying about the past.. the past is the past.. Stop worrying about tomorrow.. it might not come. Let’s focus right now on today. We have been given today to love like Jesus has commanded us, which is to love like He loved us. Today could be the new beginning of your future, but what if you missed it because you focused on tomorrow. It could be right it front of you. The opportunity you have been waiting for in your marriage, your job, or your next journey.

What does this have to do about love? If we are loving everyone like Christ loved us. The person that falls and you help up. The person that sitting by themselves crying, you ask if they are okay. Picking up the phone asking your husband or wife if you can do anything for them. That is correct, it is taking time out of your busy day to really love like Christ. Think about it, Jesus picked His disciples basically the same way, not the examples above but He chose them based on the moment in that day. He didn’t take resumes and interviews. The disciples were going about the day and it all changed with one conversation.

Do you see the picture I am trying to paint? We can have it all but we have to focus on today. If we start loving like Christ right now, trying each day to love like Christ, then I honestly believe your life will change. It’s starts today.. yes right now.. it is a choice you have personally have to make everyday!

You see picture I chose.. The Titanic.. It was up and down all through the movie. They lived and loved in the moments, but in the end at that moment Jack gave up his life for Rose. Life is messy, we never know what today holds, and take the risk of loving like Christ in every moment!
